Msstate places 1st in LA/MS-wide team mathematics competition

On Saturday 2/18, Mississippi State undergraduates Katherine Grafe, Andrew Mehta, Rob Merrell, and Tom Zhang took first place in the team mathematics competition at the Louisiana and Mississippi Spring Sectional Meeting of the Mathematical Association of America. Twelve teams from seven schools competed, with some of the best undergraduate mathematicians from the two states.

There was also an Integration Bee at the meeting, where twenty-nine students tried their skills against a series of increasingly difficult integrals. Rob Merrell took sixth place in the Integration Bee.

Kudos to all who participated!

The Spring Meeting of the LA/MS MAA section occurs every year, usually in late February. In addition to the competitions, it is an opportunity to attend some high-quality math talks. Particularly of note this year was the plenary address by Dr. Erica Flapan on "Intrinsic Properties of Graphs Embedded in R3" and the student luncheon by Dr. Doug Ensley on "Invariants Under Group Actions to Amaze Your Friends!"
