Abstract: The first part of the talk will be a gentle introduction to an important mathematical object known as a matroid. It was introduced in 1935 by Hassler Whitney, a mathematical genius who made several important contributions in topology. The second part of the talk will be on a special kind of matroids arising from graphs, known as bicircular matroids. Whitney introduced the notion of matroid duality in his 1935 masterpiece, and I will mention a recent theorem characterizing bicircular matroids whose duals are also bicircular.
