Abstract: The question addressed is how to best use yield monitor data to make variable rate nitrogen recommendations. A stochastic site-specific plateau model is estimated using Bayesian Kriging and yield monitor data. The model provides site-specific nitrogen recommendations even when all historical data are from a uniform rate. The variable rate approach returns an estimated $9/acre. The method has the potential for costs to be small since it uses data that is already being collected. The Bayesian approach also has the potential to readily incorporate other sources of information.
