The statistics faculty is one of the largest groups in the department,
with a wide range of research interests. Particular emphasis is in
time series, spatial statistics, reliability and survival analysis,
biostatistics, meta-analysis, computational statistics, applied
statistics, and statistical consulting. For more details, see the
individual faculty web pages. Statisticians in the department solve
mathematical statistics problems that extend to important real-world
applications.
Some significant problems that apply the statistical research include
the analysis of multi-channel gamma ray burst time profiles;
prediction of hurricane wind-speed; probability and statistical models
in cancer screening; estimation of the prevalence of problem gambling
among adolescents in the U.S. and Canada; efficient dynamic scheduling
of parallel processors in the application of statistical simulation
and analysis of large, multiple data sets; and statistical education.
