Research Experiences for Teachers WorkshopSaturday, February 4, 2012
HPCC Room 30, Mississippi State University
This Research Experiences for Teachers (RET) Workshop is a one-day meeting to introduce high school mathematics teachers from Mississippi and a few other states about our findings from the Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program during the summer of 2010 and 2011. It will provide an excellent opportunity for highly-motivated and dedicated high school mathematics teachers to meet and interact with the experienced college faculty, graduate students, and former REU participants to discuss the importance and opportunities of research projects for talented high school students.
During the years of 2010 and 2011, the Center for Computational Sciences (CCS) at the High Performance Computing Collaboratory (HPCC) and the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Mississippi State University have successfully hosted 10 weeks summer REU in Applied Mathematics and Biostatistics sponsored by the National Science Foundation. As a part of the REU program, the RET workshop is aimed to introduce the REU to high school teachers so they can inform their students about research opportunities at colleges, to encourage teachers to be involved in high school type research projects with their students, and to ask teachers to encourage high school students to pursue their undergraduate major in mathematical sciences.
The workshop will last one day. The schedule of the workshop includes presentations of four different REU research projects (population dynamics, image processing, computational mathematical biology, and biostatistics), proposals of high school level research projects related to the four REU projects, and a panel discussion session of all participants, including former REU students and graduate student mentors.
