Speckle image denoising: The experimental results show that the current speckle denoising model induces a loss of fine structure. A new model has been introduced and it has been shown that the new model removes noise satisfactorily while it keeps the fine structure of the image. The students will first learn the mathematical derivation of the new model and will computationally experiment the model in few different examples. They will also modify the new model and computationally test it to enhance the denoising property. In the figure below (left), the original SAR image taken of Cuba contains lots of speckle type of noise. The restored image using the conventional model (middle) removes most speckle noise but too much nonphysical dissipation induces the loss of fine structure in the image. The image on right shows that the new model removes noise satisfactorily while it keeps the fine structure of the image.
