REU 2003

REU 2005

The major area of concentration in this REU site project will be applied mathematics emphasizing population dynamics with harvesting (under the direction of Prof. R. Shivaji) and wave propagation in nonhomogeneous media (under the direction of Prof. T. Aktosun). The cross-cutting themes of the project are:

  • mathematical modeling with differential equations

  • numerical solutions, and interpretation of the solutions to explain the underlying physical phenomena

  • inverse problems and understanding their importance

  • analysis of dependence of the solution on the parameters used in the mathematical description

There are various research problems arising in the two application areas for the participants to study:

  • harvesting   (html version)   (pdf version)   (Faculty mentor: Prof. R. Shivaji)

  • wave propagation   (html version)   (pdf version)   (Faculty mentor: Prof. T. Aktosun)
