  • Is the College Algebra Placement Test (CAPT) required?
    No. The test is optional.
  • Who should take the test?
    Students who scored less than a 20 on the ACT Mathematics Subtest, but who believe they are prepared to take College Algebra without taking Intermediate Algebra first. For example, a student who successfully complete Algebra II in high school, but who has an ACT Mathematics Subscore of less than 20 may want to attempt the test.
  • Do I have to pay to take the test?
    There is no fee to take the test.
  • Are calculators allowed on the test?
    No.
  • Must I register to take the test?
    You should call or e-mail a CAPT coordinator to schedule the test. Coordinators and their contact information are
  • What should I bring to the test?
    You will need a picture ID, a pencil, and your NetID and password. For more information about your NetID and password, visit the MSU Information Technology Services web site.
  • Is there a penalty for guessing?
    No.
  • Is there partial credit?
    No.
  • How soon will I know the results?
    You score is displayed as soon as you complete the test. If you pass the test (with a score of at least 70%), please allow 48 hours for processing before attempting to register for College Algebra.
  • Can I take the test more than once?
    No.
  • Should I study for the test?
    No, but reviewing might be helpful. The concepts tested are listed on the Test Item Descriptions page of this web site.
